The UK Focal Point provides the UK component of the European Union's Early Warning System for the detection of emerging trends with new psychoactive substances. Adopted in May 2005, the Council Decision 2005/387/JHA replaces the 1997 Joint Action on New Synthetic Drugs (JANSD). It clarifies the reporting structure and widens the scope of covered substances. The aim of the decision is to ensure the rapid collection, analysis and exchange of information relating to new psychoactive substances. Its scope now includes medicinal products that show evidence of being misused. The UK Focal Point is responsible for providing information to the EMCDDA on the manufacture, traffic and use of identified substances. Further details about the Early Warning System and action on new drugs, including risk assessments on recently investigated substances, are available from the EMCDDA website.
